Private W. J. Moore
The background of this North Irish Horseman is not known at present, other than that he was born around 1891, and was a Presbyterian. The only documentation about his service in the war is a reference in the admission records of the 51st Field Ambulance in July 1918.
Moore enlisted in the North Irish Horse between 14 and 16 October 1914 (No.1311 - later Corps of Hussars No.71331). He embarked for France around February 1915 with a reinforcement draft for A and C Squadrons. Moore was probably posted to the former.
A Squadron served as escort to the BEF's Commander-in-Chief at St Omer until January 1916, when it was posted as divisional cavalry to the 55th Division. In May 1916 the squadron came together with E and D Squadrons to form the 1st North Irish Horse Regiment, serving as corps cavalry to VII, XIX, then V Corps until February-March 1918, when the regiment was dismounted and converted to a cyclist unit. It then served as corps cyclists to V Corps until the end of the war.
In July 1918 Moore was serving with the North Irish Horse Cyclist Regiment when he fell ill with influenza. He was admitted to the 51st Field Ambulance before being sent on for treatment at another facility.
